These images are from “Care of Ward 81” by Bill Diodato — Golden Section Publishing, 2010. 64 pp., 46 color and black & white illustrations., 10×6½ (you can purchase and learn more here).

This is Bill’s first monograph.  Care of Ward 81 is the first of two books on the subject.  Located at the Oregon State Mental Hospital (the hospital where One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was filmed in 1976), Ward 81 was set up as a psychiatric ward to help women in need by providing them with medical attention and isolation.

During 2005, the entire site was being redeveloped.  The Oregon State Legislature authorized Bill Diodato to photograph and thus document the cremated remains of some of 3,500 deceased patients of the “Asylum” which, in one final act of inhumanity, had been exhumed.  During this very moving project, Warden Marvin Fickle also granted Bill access to the infamous closed-off Ward 81.  Knowing that he would be the last person to document the ward, Bill felt a sense of responsibility to remember the women who inhabited this extraordinary place. The result is “c/o Ward 81”

Donald Cameron, Perth, Scotland

Donald Cameron is a Scotland-based fine art photographer.  In his own words:

“Mono Photography, the black and white art. It’s a vision of oceans, of vast empty beaches and fast shifting skies. It’s the click of a shutter and the long exposure wait.

It’s the taming of tides and the bite of north winds. It’s bound to sea stories and verse inspired. It’s complete isolation, it’s real but not real, it’s the monochrome blues and the shoreline shuffle. It’s every part that, but most of all this… Scotland, my camera, and me.”

Copyright Donald Cameron

“With long exposure black & white photography becoming increasingly common these days, it is a greater challenge to stand out from the crowd and produce work which holds the viewer’s attention. However, for me this has made the strive for originality even more vital; and through attention to detail in composition, subject, exposure control and post-processing, this is what I continue to aim for.

Taking this further, I combine each image with poetry to add greater depth and meaning to the works. It’s about taking a seascape photograph and imagining the story behind it, leading the viewer’s mind into places they might never have gone with the image alone.

In 2009 I became Creative Director of Photography at the online art collective SlashTHREE.com, a renowned art site featuring themed exhibitions by some of the world’s best up-and-coming artists. As well as creating exclusive images for each exhibition, my role is to curate the photography submissions and bring in new talent to the site.

I work with Canon digital SLR bodies and lenses, and travel extensively around Scotland and occasionally further afield chasing the light, land and sea. During my university studies in Edinburgh I obtained a Bachelor of Arts 1st Class Honours degree, and now aged 28, I live in Perth (Scotland) where I spend most of my days wishing I lived by the coast…”

Andrea Hubner, Germany

Andrea Hubner was born in 1984 in a small town near Frankfurt am Main, Germany.  Very early in her life, she became interested in photography and soon started with sports photography (cycling).  Some years later, she began to focus on people and nude photography, a sphere that began to captivate her and until now remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration. She’s currently a full-time student of french and british studies at the university of Mainz, so photography is a passion but not her profession.

At the moment, she’s using a Canon 5D MarkII (usually with a 50mm/1.4 lens) for her digital photos and a Hasselblad 500c/m for film shots. In addition to that, she also experiment with cameras such as a Holga and a Polaroid.

Matteo Alvazzi Delfrate is a self-taught photographer.  He started shooting in 2009 with a Nikon D90 DSLR, and he moved to film with a Leica M6 on January 2010. Street Photography is something he fell in love with as soon as he saw it.  Walking around streets, freezing moments forever, is something that gives him peace and confidence.  It changed the way he perceives everything he sees, with and without a camera in his hands.

Piper Robbins Photography, San Francisco, CA

Copyright Piper Robbins Photography

Piper Robbins took her first photograph at 3 years old.  ”My parents actually still show it to people, and it’s not good.”  She is from Southern Indiana and is finishing up her BFA in San Francisco at the Academy of Art University. Piper is working on continuing her portraiture portfolio, and is excited to do more.  She also shoots a large variety of subjects, as you can see by taking a look at her web site.  Piper is a hard core analogue photographer. “There is nothing like the feeling I get when I see the grain come into focus in the darkroom. It’s so much more than taking pictures at that point, it’s a completely involved beautiful experience. I plan on doing everything in my power to make sure this process isn’t lost in the digital era.”

Sarah Zemunski Photography, San Francisco, CA

Copyright Sarah Zemunski

Photographer Sarah Zemunski prefers to place her animal subjects in a graphic & colorful environment.  She is drawn to texture and detail, and often choose specific backgrounds to enhance her subject’s fur, feathers, or scales.  She wants her environmental portraits to look like carefully composed paintings.  The shape and texture of the animals become part of the composition, and light is the glue that holds the elements of the image together.  Natural light is preferred for aesthetic reasons, although she has begun experimenting with strobe, and most animals don’t seem to mind the flash.  She shoots all her work digitally, and uses Photoshop to enhance her photos.  She respects the quality and process of traditional analog photography, although she feels the digital process lends itself perfectly to her style.

Domenico Foschi, Whittier, California

Copyright Domenico Fosch

Photographer Domenico Foschi was born in Bari, Italy, in 1962.  Although constantly exploring different kinds of creative media since childhood, he discovered a love for photography after stealing his brother’s camera to document a short trip. He was nineteen at the time.

Unable to afford a formal education in photography, he turned to books in order to learn the techniques of the masters.  Domenico found power in the photographic expression of Alvin Langdon Coburn, Kertesz, Steichen, Stieglitz, Strand, Sandr, Penn, Avedon and more;  all of pivotal importance in his inspiration as a fine art photographer.  Working in the Sergio Guidetti Studio Fotografico, Domenico received hands-on training in the use of large format cameras, and developing and printing techniques.

He then put his skill to a different use and worked as a freelance commercial photographer in Ravenna, his hometown, shooting primarily for magazines, newspapers, city administration and political figures.  Domenico moved to the US in 1989, an opportunity which afforded him the production of an extensive body of work.

A native Californian living in the northern Sierra Nevada near Taylorsville, California, Clifton began photographing in 1977 after seking advice and inspiration from his mentor and neighbor, master landscape photographer Philip Hyde.  After graduating from Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, with a degree in Commercial Photography, Clifton began his freelance career making photographs of landscapes from Arctic Alaska to the Amazon Basin; from teh Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia to teh hardwood forests of New England.

A professional advisor for Outdoor Photographer, and best known for his five exhibit format books showcasing his work, Clifton’s portfolio is comprised of thousands of editorial, corporate and advertising credits, and the award-winning documentary, Three Women, Three Hundred Miles.

Chris Honeysett, San Francisco

Copyright Chris Honeysett

Chris Honeysett began photographing at the age of 3, and hasn’t stopped.  Moving to a large format camera in 1987 changed the way he photographed.  The slow, cumbersome equipment allowed for a more meditative approach.  The broad landscape was his starting point, slowly minimizing his angle of view over the years.

Chris has made his living selling his creative photographs since 1987, showing at nationally recognized art festivals.  He has won dozens of awards for his work.  He was co-owner Two Visions Gallery from 2000 – 2006.  His photographs have been published in Black & White Magazine, View Camera, and in wto monographs: Qualities of Light (Crean Editions, 2000) and The Essence of Form (Crean Editions, 2005).  His lives with his wife and son in the Bay Area.
