Andrew Kornylak, Atlanta

Andrew Kornylak is an Atlanta-based outdoor adventure and lifestyle photographer.

Andrew grew up in a small town in Ohio in the 70s and 80s. Some of his earliest memories were of late nights around his dad’s Kodak Carousel, staring at endless Kodachromes of the family vacation, or a business trip to Turkey. “I remember thinking that Dad wasn’t so much interested in peoples’ reactions or even whether everyone was asleep. He just really enjoyed the process of looking at a new batch of slides.”

A camera addict for most of his life and a rock climber since ‘92, Andrew has been a professional photographer since 2000. When he started out in the climbing photography world, Andrew’s work quickly began breaking the mold, blending climbing skill with modern lighting techqniques and multiple film and digital formats.

Andrew still specializes in outdoor adventure and lifestyle, but his unique style is sought by a wide variety of clients, from National Geographic Adventure, Backpacker, and Boys Life, to Businessweek, Discovery Channel, and The Wall Street Journal. He has pushed in new directions for multimedia, mixing still photography tools to create motion pieces with a technique he calls “Stillmotion,” motion sequences with a still camera at low frame rates, but with beautifully high-resolution frames and great color depth, captured with still photography lenses and strobe lighting.

“The result is something very cool, but perhaps just a waypoint between technologies. In five years the technology will totally change, but until then, I love hacking current technology to see where it can be pushed.”  Andrew continues to push his craft, whether in the editorial and commercial arena.
