Phillip Toledano, New York City

Phillip Toledano owns and operates Phillip Toledano Photography out of New York City, NY.

Phillip was born in London in 1968 to an American father and French Moroccan mother.  After a convincing presentation on the merits of photography to his parents at the age of 11, he received his first camera.  He has been taking “slightly odd” pictures ever since.  His photography career was briefly interrupted by a ten-year stint as an art director working at ad agencies such as TBWA/Chiat/Day, Berlin Cameron, and Fallon.  Phillip resumed full-time pitcure-taking a few years ago.  He believes that everything should start with an idea, wether it be a single image or a series.  He also believes that a photograph should be like an unfinished sentence.  There should be space for questions.

These images are from Phillip’s Bankrupt book.  ”At the beginning of 2001, I started taking pictures of recently abandoned offices and the things people had left behind. This project was more than photography for me. It was economic archeology. America has not suffered such a vertiginous economic collapse since the 1930’s, and I wanted to document the human cost while it was happening…,” says Phillip.
