Michael Napper, Los Angeles
Michael Napper is a Los Angeles-based fine art photographer. These selected images are from his “Structures & Devices” series.
Structures and Devices is an on-going series of photographed objects, structures, and devices constructed from drawings and paintings of mine and/or found materials. The photograpic work is directly descended from Michael’s background as a painter, and inspired by certain works of literature: genres ranging from fables and myths, literature from the 19th century Symbolists, to contemporary literature. Loosely described, they are Illustrations of fragments from an unwritten fable, depicting landscapes, remnants, amulets, structures, devices….
Michael works only with film. He’s found that digital photography for him has specific parameters and inherent principles that preclude access to a fragility and randomness that he values in both painting and film. The chemistry of film-based photography, both literally and figuratively, provides a certain process and pace with which he finds more akin to the activity of painting.
